Vacancy for a Construction Buyer

O Seaman and Son Ltd are recruiting for a Construction Buyer to be responsible for procuring all necessary materials, plant and external labour for construction projects, ensuring they are delivered on time and within budget. This role requires a strong understanding of construction processes,
material costs, and supplier management, as well as excellent negotiation and communication skills.

Key Responsibilities

  • Sourcing and Procurement: Identifying suitable suppliers and subcontractors, obtaining quotes, negotiating prices and terms, and managing purchase orders.
  • Cost Management: Ensuring materials and services are purchased at the most cost-effective prices while maintaining quality and adhering to project budgets.
  • Supplier Relationship Management: Building and maintaining strong relationships with suppliers, monitoring their performance, and resolving any issues related to quality, delivery, or pricing.
  • Contract Negotiation: Negotiating contracts with suppliers and subcontractors, ensuring favourable terms and conditions for the company.
  • Quality Assurance: Ensuring materials and services meet the required quality standards and specifications.
  • Inventory Management: Tracking inventory levels and ensuring materials are available when needed, minimising delays and waste.
  • Collaboration: Working closely with project managers, estimators, and other team members to understand project requirements and ensure timely delivery of materials.
  • Risk Management: Identifying and mitigating potential risks associated with the supply chain, such as price fluctuations, material shortages, and supplier delays.
  • Compliance: Ensuring all procurement activities comply with relevant health and safety regulations, company policies, and legal requirements.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • Experience: Previous experience in construction purchasing or procurement is essential.
  • Knowledge: In-depth knowledge of construction materials, plant, and subcontractors.
  • Negotiation Skills: Strong negotiation skills to secure the best prices and terms from suppliers.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills to liaise with suppliers, subcontractors, and internal teams.
  • Organisational Skills: Strong organisational skills to manage multiple projects, track inventory, and maintain accurate records.
  • Problem-Solving Skills: Ability to identify and resolve issues related to procurement, supply chain, or supplier performance.
  • Computer Skills: Proficiency in using procurement software, Microsoft Office Suite, and other relevant software.
