Exciting Challenges Working with Living Architecture

Seamans Building is currently working for Living Architecture constructing a challenging dwelling in North Suffolk.

The Balancing Barn, near Halesworth, is a steel framed structure which is cantilevered out over the sloping site, to leave much of the structure “floating” above its landscape. Designed by the acclaimed architectural practice of MVRDV and co-architect Mole Architects, this project is one of a series of holiday homes being built by Living Architecture around the UK.

First impressions are that the building is breaking the laws of gravity, although by careful foundation design, the building is firmly anchored into the ground at the top of the slope.

The 30m long building, projecting 15 m out into the unspoilt surrounding rural landscape overlooks a pond and wildlife haven. The building will be clad in stainless steel shingles and the reflections in the cladding will give the building a continuously changing appearance throughout each season of the year.

The building will provide spacious accommodation with a large kitchen/dining area, four double bedrooms, each with their own en-suite bathroom, and at the far end of the cantilever, a spacious lounge area with full height windows and a glass floor panel to optimise the views from the property. A hidden staircase accesses a lower level “basement” containing utility room, heating plant and access to the garden area.
